Wellesley empowers women

Today, I had a conversation with several women in my field of research (environmental science) about how women are lacking in leadership roles within science. Long story short, I ended up telling them about how Wellesley really cultivates an empowering environment for women to go after ambitious career goals and teaches us not to be afraid to be offended or to stand up to bs from our male colleagues etc etc. The others were really impressed with this and said they really wished their schools had the same kind of atmosphere.

Also, apparently it is unheard of (or at least really gutsy) to feel comfortable just calling up alums and networking with them because they are alumnae. Wellesley's alumnae network is one of the biggest pulls for me and I'm so proud of how alums are willing to bend over backwards for other alums or students, and as a young alum, I've been able to repay the karma for several students as well.

I just wanted to share that story and give a shout out to all the Wellesley alums out there who are inspiring, glass-ceiling-breaking or just otherwise kickass role models for all the rest of us. Here's to you!

Transformation and Transcendence: the Power of Female Friendship

A Wellesley friend of mine recently emailed this article about female friendship to me and I wanted to share it with you. It reminded me of just how powerful our Wellesley sisterhood is. I've only just graduated a year and half ago, but I've already seen just how amazing our bonds are =)

Transformation and Transcendence: the Power of Female Friendship

excerpt from the article:

The Wrinklies weren’t spinsters or old maids and they were not "failures" in any way. They were free. It was I who failed to see them, until later, for who they really were: educated, hugely intelligent, fascinating, financially independent. Women who led rich lives full of meaningful work, deep and lasting friendship, sex when they wanted it, time with the beloved children of their family and friends, conversations about politics and art and literature, culture, travel to remarkable destinations where they did not journey as unconscious tourists but as guests in people’s homes and hearts. Despite these full lives they owned their own time, they owned their days. I did not. I was too busy trying to find someone who would spend the days with me, as if this would validate my presence in the world.

Cinema and Media Studies

I recently applied for Early Evaluation, and Wellesley is my definite first choice (simultaneously anxious and excited for February!) and I'd like to have a little more information regarding the Cinema and Media Studies major. Does anyone have any experience with it? Teachers, content, everything-wise? Are there significant internship opportunities like there are for more established majors? It seems that its a fairly new major, so there doesn't seem to be much general information about it.

I know that you have to declare a 'track' and that, if admitted, I would most likely be going through the production track (am I correct in assuming that this would focus mainly on the development and creation of student films? I love film history as well, and I know that will be incorporated, but I'm more interested in learning the actual art) so any info pertaining to that specifically would be tons of help as well.

Finally, I would ideally like to double major in Political Science and Cinema and Media Studies. I've read in various places that double majoring makes it pretty much impossible to study abroad, is this true?

Anyway, sorry for the novel! Thanks in advance for any help you can give!
